SHOW REVIEW: INTERDIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSIONS @ TANGENT GALLERY

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2024

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN THE MOTORMOUTH WINTER/SPRING ZINE

HIGH VELOCITY THRILL AND OCEANIC AMBIANCE...

It’s no secret: if Interdimensional Transmissions is throwing an event, you should be there. Don’t fret if you're unfamiliar with the DJs on the lineup, you're in the hands of techno promoters who’ve been perfecting the art of parties since 1998. This Winter, the record label/promotion company showcased their greatness again with my event of the year, a stacked Saturday night seance that transported dancers into a space of high-velocity, sonic thrill.

As usual, the IT crew transformed Tangent Gallery into a luminous cavern, awash in violet, blue, and red hues that submerged dancers in an oceanic ambiance. In the gallery, candles adorned the stage while a slideshow honored the work of the late photographer, Heather Delaney. In the main room, draped ceilings created a focal point at the DJ booth, where smoke floated into the crowd.

Then there’s the music. I arrived with my partner as AZA was mixing a hypnotic techno set. Amplified by Jim Gibbons’ immaculately dialed-in surround sound setup, I was instantly won over as a fan. She is absolutely one to keep on your radar.

But the main event was yet to come. Touching down from Berlin, DJ Stingray 313, the Tresor regular graced us with an increasingly rare hometown set. For years, I’ve anticipated seeing the Drexciyan take to the decks, and expectations were accordingly high. I had an idea of what we were in for– a hard-hitting mix of electro ragers from one of the game’s most skilled– but nothing could prepare me for what was coming. As collective energy and tension reached fever pitch, he arrived in his signature balaclava mask and Detroit Tigers jersey. As expected, Stingray began with a Drexciyan staple – Arpanet’s “Ionic Crystals”– which created a tense energy before unleashing an unrelenting onslaught of hip-hop-infused electro that set off a wild party for the next 2 hours. When the dust settled, I was left certain of one thing and one thing only: this is the best working DJ in the world.

If anyone could follow that up, it’d be closers BMG and Erika, AKA Ectomorph. While Stingray favored speed and velocity, the underground veteran duo preferred space and subtlety. Their live set was a journey through modular beats, an immersive experience that scratched an itch for new patterns and sounds, ebbing and flowing like waves. Their performance was a testament to their legendary, "if you know you know" status.

We couldn't be more excited for Movement weekend when I.T. brings Stingray & AZA back for their Tresor 313 party (the Motormouth crew's top event of the weekend...). This time around, they’re going all night alongside heavyweights DJ Bone, Model 500, Batu, Akua, Tinton Duvante, and Huey Mnemonic. Daniel Bell will be delivering one of his iconic sunrise sets. Don't skip it.
